Harvest Hues: Pastel Still Life
Warm greetings from my studio, I’m Tahera, and I present to you a pastel portrait of autumn’s bounty. In this still life, I have laid out a spread of fall’s richness—the earthy tones of the harvest season caught in the velvety texture of pastels.
The Composition:
The arrangement is a classical study of form and color. A jug, a vase, a slice of cake, apples, and a pumpkin—all these elements were chosen for their varied shapes and the way their colors play with the autumn light.

The Color Palette:
I chose pastels to evoke the softness of the season. The golden yellows, deep oranges, and creamy whites intermingle to create a tapestry of harvest shades. Each stroke is a leaf in the wind, each shade a note in a melody of thanksgiving.
The Textures:
Pastels are unique—they lie somewhere between painting and drawing, and in this work, they allowed me to layer texture upon texture. The roughness of the pumpkin’s skin, the smoothness of the ceramic, and the fluffiness of the cake’s frosting are all rendered through this tactile medium.
Reflection and Depth:
The polished surface below reflects the setup, a nod to the introspection that the season brings. I endeavored to capture not just the physical reflection, but the depth of our own reflections in these longer, quieter nights.
The Mood:
There’s a serene joy in this scene, a celebration of the simple abundance of life. The lighting is soft, yet warm, inviting the viewer to sit down at the table of seasons and partake in the visual feast.
Conclusion:
This pastel piece is an homage to autumn, to the harvest, and to the simple pleasures that lie in the art of stillness. It’s my hope that it brings a moment of peace and a slice of the season’s best to your day.
Do these pastels speak to you of chilly mornings and warm afternoons? What does the harvest season mean to you? Share your autumnal reflections; I’d love to hear them.
